Timothy Skinner, Professor - Australia

Professor Timothy Skinner will be coming to work at the Steno Diabetes Centre with the Diabetes Management Research group.  Timothy was trained as a Health Psychologist in the UK, where he was responsible for the development of several diabetes self-management support programs for adolescents with T1D and adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. One of these programs, DESMOND, for individuals newly diagnosed with T2D is now delivered across the UK, and adapted versions delivered in Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. 

Since moving to Australian in 2007, his work has focused on reducing the psychological distress experienced by people living with diabetes, the development and evaluation of diabetes prevention programs, as well as the continued development of the DESMOND program, which is currently being adapted for Indigenous Australians. 

Whilst at the Steno Diabetes Centre, Timothy will be working with Research Manager Ingrid Willaing  and her team in the Diabetes Management research group on projects looking at how to effectively enable health professionals to support people with diabetes, especially for emerging adults with T1D, in the workplace, for those with mental health problems and the distress related to screening for complications. 

His experience and expertise in developing, evaluating and getting programs implemented in sustainable in the real world, will enhance the capabilities of the Diabetes Management Research group, and accelerate the implementation of their innovative programs into the routine practice of diabetes care in Denmark.
