Workshop on Causes & Consequences of Insulin Resistance in Pregnancy -
Event info

Event date:

12/12/2019 - 09:00

Registration deadline:

29/11/2019 - 00:00

Over the last decades there has been an increase in obesity among women in the reproductive age leading to deterioration in the physiologic insulin resistance in pregnant women both with and without diabetes.

This workshop focuses on gathering and establishing an interdisciplinary network of researchers and clinicians to discuss and share knowledge of the complex determinants and causal mechanisms of insulin resistance in pregnancy.

TIME & PLACE

Dates: 12 December, 2019 from 9:00 to 17:30 hrs.
Venue: Moesgaard Museum, Conference room 301, Moesgård Allé 15, 8270 Højbjerg, Denmark

WHO CAN ATTEND?

The workshop addresses researchers representing both clinical and basal research within the fields of obstetrics, endocrinology, and metabolism. Both established and early career researchers are welcome. Clinicians with a particular interest in insulin resistance in pregnancy are also most welcome.

Please note that limited seats are available and participants will be allocated a seat on a first come, first served basis.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The physiology of insulin resistance during pregnancy is fascinating; from an evolutionary point of view designed to limit maternal glucose uptake and thereby shunt an adequate amount of supply to the growing fetus.

However, over the last decades there has been an increase in obesity among women in the reproductive age, leading to a deterioration in the physiologic insulin resistance, both in pregnant women with and without diabetes, with a negative impact on the intrauterine environment, affecting perinatal programming and potentially resulting in metabolic dysfunction in the offspring. The determinants and causal mechanisms of insulin resistance in pregnancy are complex and still not completely revealed.

To address this knowledge gap, this workshop aims at establishing an interdisciplinary network of researchers and clinicians who can share knowledge in the field and make new collaborations.

The programme will encompass both national and international speakers giving presentations on:

  • Physiological and molecular mechanisms behind insulin resistance in pregnancy.
  •  Maternal and fetal consequences of insulin resistance.
  • Initiatives to prevent severe insulin resistance in pregnancy.

Throughout the day, both presenters and participants will be involved in interactive activities planned to facilitate discussion and future collaborations. These activities include networking bingo, meet the professor sessions and walk and talks.
